One of the reasons I enjoy photographing weddings here is the amount of visual variety we can create without the day feeling like a photoshoot.
The morning is about far more than getting ready. I photograph the atmosphere building around you, the details you have carefully chosen and all those little interactions that happen while everyone prepares for what is ahead.
During the ceremony I work quietly and unobtrusively, capturing not only the two of you but the reactions happening around you. Those expressions from parents, friends and family are often some of the photographs couples value most afterwards.
The two tier terrace gives us the opportunity to create something a little different with confetti. Guests can be positioned across the different levels, adding depth to the photograph and allowing the architecture of the venue to become part of the image.
I want you back with your guests as much as possible. I normally keep your couple portraits during the drinks reception short, around ten to fifteen minutes (depending upon the time of year) using a few carefully chosen locations so that you aren't away from your celebrations for very long. Then after dinner, I would recommend a second short session to stroll around the grounds as the sun moves much lower to make best use of this beautiful venue and the backdrop that it offers.
At The Mill Barns we have enough variety close by that we can use the bridge, water and surrounding greenery efficiently, then get you straight back to the celebration.
I plan photography around your wedding rather than expecting your wedding to fit around photographs. Before the day we will talk through your timings, ceremony, group photographs and anything particularly important to you so I know exactly where photography can fit naturally.
For most weddings I prefer to split couple portraits into shorter sessions. We might take fifteen to twenty minutes during the drinks reception and, if the light is particularly lovely later, step outside again briefly in the evening. It gives you more variety without losing a huge chunk of time with your guests.
I never rely completely on golden hour because British weather has other ideas far too often. We will create a strong set of portraits earlier in the day, then if beautiful evening light appears we can take advantage of it without any pressure. The result is more variety and far less risk.
Rain does not mean your photography suddenly stops. The size and architecture of The Mill Barns give us indoor options while we wait for showers to pass, and I will keep an eye on the weather throughout the day so we can use any dry windows without turning the wedding into a military operation. The terrace is also handily covered by the apex of the roof so creates a sheltered area outside too.
If the weather improves later, we can simply head outside for a few minutes. Keeping portraits flexible rather than tying everything to one fixed time makes a huge difference on unpredictable days.
The reception space continues the same feeling of height and scale, while the table styling, speeches and reactions bring something completely different to the photographs.
After dark, The Mill Barns changes again. The LED lighting and festoon bulbs give us the opportunity to create something more atmospheric later in the evening. If your photography collection includes my signature night time portraits, I will usually borrow you for just a few minutes once it is dark.
My approach is centred around real moments, genuine emotion and allowing you to properly experience your wedding rather than constantly performing for the camera.
Most of the day is photographed as it naturally unfolds. I will quietly look for the reactions, interactions and little in between moments that tell the real story, while stepping in with gentle guidance when it is genuinely useful.
Portraits are relaxed rather than heavily posed, group photographs are kept organised and efficient, and I will always be thinking about the light and the venue around us. The aim is a gallery that feels natural and full of life while still looking elegant and beautifully considered.
